SAP embeds AI agents into the core of retail operations at NRF 2026

At the NRF 2026 retail conference in January, SAP announced that AI is being built into the core of its retail platform rather than bolted on. Among the new capabilities are Retail Intelligence, which uses AI-generated simulations for demand and inventory planning; AI-assisted assortment management through the Joule copilot, letting staff create or retire product assortments in natural language; and an Order Reliability Agent, planned for Q2 2026, that proactively flags order status, stock availability, and fulfillment risks before they reach the customer. SAP also introduced a Storefront MCP Server for SAP Commerce Cloud, which makes online storefronts intelligible to AI assistants such as ChatGPT, pointing toward a more channel-less way of shopping.

The theme running through the announcements is a shift from AI as a feature to AI as an operating layer that plans, decides, and acts across the retail workflow. This direction resonates with Ergonet’s own work on AI-powered commerce and office automation — an autonomous storefront salesman, product-image and SEO tooling, and smart importers — where making a catalog legible and actionable to AI agents is becoming a shared industry goal.
